Processing Flared Gas as Fuel for Power Generation, Reducing Environmental Impact
Press Release – 1-20 Sudapet-MPS Joint Venture
Khartoum, Sudan: January 21, 2020: Monitor Power Systems AS, (“MPS”) , a Norwegian provider of comprehensive energy solutions, is pleased to announce it has entered into a Joint Venture Agreement with Sudan National Petroleum Corporation (“Sudapet”) for the processing of associated (flared) gas to provide feedstock for power generation and to
provide condensate and LPG for domestic use, increasing economic and socioeconomic benefits while reducing environmental impact in the first gas-to-power development in Sudan.
The Joint Venture, owned 51% by Sudapet and 49% by MPS, will (i) initially process gas associated with oil production in Blocks 4 & 6 currently being flared, (ii) build out gas pipeline infrastructure, and (iii) build and operate a 460MW combined cycle powerplant located in Al Fula. The JV will provide feedstock for the powerplant and will also produce 3000 barrels of
condensate and 350 tons of LPG per day domestic use.
The Joint Venture anticipates capital expenditure of US $ 850 million. The signing ceremony was attended by the Minister of Energy and Mines, the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Energy and Mines, and the Norwegian Ambassador to the
Republic of Sudan. Mr. Aaserod declared the Joint Venture an important step for a sustainable energy solution
that provides environmental, socioeconomic and economic benefits to Sudan. He further stated the Joint Venture will conduct feasibility and ESHIA studies, with plant construction scheduled to begin in July 2020 and operations to begin 18 months thereafter in February 2022.
