The residents of Owerri the state capital were woken by rapid gunshots on the mid morning of today the 5th of April 2021 on what is now being regarded as the Easter Monday Mayhem as unknown Gunmen attacked the Owerri Correctional Prison in the Imo State capital and freed over 1500 inmates, Nigerian Eye Newspaper le learnt.
The attackers also razed the Imo State Police Command headquarters situated in Owerri and burnt almost all the vehicles parked at the command headquarters. The hoodlums further freed the suspects in almost all the cells at the State Criminal Investigation Department of the command.
Report has it that the gunmen operated from 1am till 3am on Monday with no restraint from any security operative in the state,they are alleged to have sang solidarity songs at the Government House Roundabout for about 30 minutes before attacking the facilities, a security source revealed.
On breaking into the prison facility with the aid of explosives and dynamite, the attackers told the inmates, “Go home, Jesus has risen. You have no reason to be here.”
The police spokesperson in the state, Orlando Ikeokwu, confirmed the attacks and assured the people of the state that the security agencies were on top of the matter.
