Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, a familiar face in Nigerian politics, looks set to make another bid for the presidency in 2027, according to his 2023 campaign spokesperson, Daniel Bwala.
Speaking on a Channels TV program on Tuesday, Bwala declared, “Sure, he would run. He has the capacity, he has the wisdom, he has the knowledge, he has the energy. And he is a president we never had.” Bwala went on to praise Abubakar’s experience and understanding of the private sector, claiming it to be crucial for revitalizing the Nigerian economy.
This announcement marks the seventh time Abubakar has set his sights on the presidency. He has previously contested in 1993, 2007, 2011, 2015, 2019, and most recently in 2023, each time falling short of victory. Despite these repeated losses, Bwala remains confident in his principal’s chances, describing him as “the president the country is missing.”
Abubakar’s potential 2027 candidacy is certain to generate strong reactions. Supporters will likely commend his persistence and experience, while critics may question the wisdom of another attempt after six unsuccessful efforts.
