BREAKING: President Tinubu suspends Betta Edu over N585m scandal

Betta Edu, the minister of humanitarian affairs and poverty alleviation, has been suspended from her duties by President Bola Tinubu.

This was disclosed by Ajuri Ngelale, the presidential spokesman, in a statement on Monday. He said the decision was based on the president’s pledge to maintain the highest levels of honesty, openness, and responsibility in the stewardship of the nation’s resources.

Edu faced backlash for requesting the accountant general of the federation to transfer N585 million allocated for vulnerable groups in four states to a personal account.

Mr Ngelale said, “The President also instructs the Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to carry out a detailed probe into all aspects of the financial dealings involving the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, and one or more agencies under it.

“The President orders the suspended Minister to hand over to the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, and she is also ordered by the President to fully comply with the probing authorities as they conduct their probe.

“Additionally, the President has assigned a panel that is led by the Coordinating Minister of the Economy and Minister of Finance to, among other tasks, perform a thorough assessment of the financial structure and framework of the social investment programmes with the aim of definitively transforming the relevant institutions and programmes in a resolute effort to eradicate all institutional weaknesses for the sole benefit of underprivileged households and restore public trust in the initiative. These orders of the President are effective immediately.”
