Ohanaeze Ndigbo Condemns Nimbo Killings, Urges Swift Action Against Herdsmen Violence in Southeast

The apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has vehemently condemned the recent heinous killings of residents in Nimbo community, Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area of Enugu State, allegedly perpetrated by suspected herdsmen. The barbaric incident, which claimed the lives of Okeh Oruki, Okeh Chukwuemeka, Julius Odiegwu, and Gabriel Ezra, has sent shockwaves throughout the Southeast region.

In a statement issued by the factional Secretary-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, on Tuesday, the organization expressed deep concern and outrage at the wave of violence unleashed on Nimbo Community. Isiguzoro emphasized that such malicious attacks are direct assaults on the peace and stability of Igbo communities and must be vehemently condemned.

Moreover, Ohanaeze Ndigbo called for an immediate response from relevant authorities to address the growing threat posed by armed herdsmen in the Southeast. The organization urged Southeast Governors, the Inspector General of Police, and other security agencies to launch a comprehensive investigation into the recent surge in violence and ensure the safety of residents, particularly vulnerable farmers in rural areas.

The statement underscored the need for collaboration between community vigilante groups and security forces to thwart further attempts to disrupt farming activities and instill fear in the communities. Ohanaeze Ndigbo stressed that the reign of terror orchestrated by killer herdsmen must come to an end, and those responsible for such despicable acts must face the full wrath of the law.

Furthermore, Ohanaeze Ndigbo demanded justice and accountability from the authorities to ensure that the perpetrators of the Nimbo killings are swiftly apprehended and prosecuted. The organization extended heartfelt sympathies to Governor Peter Mba of Enugu State and the bereaved families of Nimbo Community, emphasizing the importance of providing support and assistance to the affected communities.

In addition, Ohanaeze Ndigbo reiterated the necessity for Southeast Governors to reinstate the ban on the conveyance of cattle by foot within the region. The organization emphasized that cattle rearing should operate within the confines of established laws and in harmony with resident communities. Ohanaeze Ndigbo affirmed the Southeast’s rejection of Ruga settlements and vowed to protect its land from any encroachment.

As the region navigates through this turbulent period, Ohanaeze Ndigbo called upon the people of the Southeast to remain calm, vigilant, and cooperative with security agencies. The organization urged against resorting to retaliation or taking the law into their own hands, emphasizing the importance of pursuing peaceful and lawful means to address grievances and ensure the safety and security of all residents.
