Former members of the royal family, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, have found newfound freedom from strict royal protocols regarding gift acceptance since stepping back from their official duties in 2020. Previously, as working royals, they were subject to stringent rules, particularly concerning gifts from the public and private companies.
While serving as working royals, Meghan and Harry had to adhere to rules ensuring that gifts received did not compromise the monarchy’s integrity. This included returning £7 million worth of wedding presents received in 2018, despite their request for charitable donations instead of gifts.
The royal protocol prohibits members from accepting gifts that might place them under obligation to the donor or be perceived as a form of advertising. Consequently, Meghan and Harry had to return gifts from well-wishers and companies to uphold these principles.
However, since stepping back, the couple is no longer bound by these rules. During their recent visit to Nigeria, they were free to accept gifts without constraint. For example, they gratefully received traditional Nigerian clothing and sentimental portraits, reflecting their appreciation for the warm reception during their trip.
Their newfound freedom allows Meghan and Harry to cherish tokens of goodwill from individuals and nations without the constraints of royal protocol, marking a significant shift in their public and personal lives.
