The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) have announced an indefinite nationwide strike starting Monday, June 3rd. This decision follows the federal government’s failure to finalize negotiations on a new national minimum wage and to reverse the recent increase in electricity tariffs.
The labour unions had given the government a deadline of May 31st to complete the wage negotiations or face industrial action.
On Friday evening, during a meeting meant to finalize the minimum wage discussions, the leaders of NLC and TUC, Comrade Joe Ajaero and Comrade Festus Osifo, walked out. They then called an emergency press briefing to announce the strike due to a breakdown in the negotiations.
At the press briefing, both leaders asked Nigerians to understand and bear with the inconvenience the strike might cause. More details are expected as the situation develops.
