Organised Labour Rejects ₦62,000 New Minimum Wage, Threatens Strike

The Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress have rejected the ₦62,000 new minimum wage proposed by the Bola Tinubu government, describing it as a “starvation wage”. They demand a minimum wage of ₦250,000, considering the country’s economic realities.

Chris Onyeka, Assistant General Secretary of the NLC, stated that the union will not negotiate a starvation wage and will resume the nationwide strike on Tuesday if the government fails to meet their demand.

The union gave the government a one-week ultimatum, which expires on Tuesday. If the government does not respond, the organs of Organised Labour will meet to decide on the next step, which may include an indefinite strike.

The labour leaders insist that the proposed wage is below what Nigerian workers need to survive, considering the cost of living in the country. They urge the government to send an Executive Bill to the National Assembly to meet their demands.
