President Tinubu Appoints Bisi Akande, Others to Head Federal Universities

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Chief Bisi Akande, a former Governor of Osun State, as the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of the University of Ibadan. This appointment is part of a larger list of chairmen and members of the governing councils of federal universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education released by the Federal Government.

Other notable appointments include renowned lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Wole Olanipekun, as the Pro-Chancellor of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), and former Governor of Bauchi State, Isa Yuguda, as the Pro-Chancellor of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN). Yayale Ahmed, a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, was appointed to head Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria.

The list also includes appointments to the governing councils of Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education, Owerri, Imo State, and Obafemi Awolowo University, among others. This move is aimed at ensuring the effective management of Nigerian tertiary institutions across the country.

The earlier list of members of the reconstituted governing councils was withdrawn following a directive by the president to undertake a thorough review of the nominees. The leadership of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and some other stakeholders had faulted the list over alleged lopsidedness and other considerations.

With this new list, President Tinubu has demonstrated his commitment to ensuring that Nigerian tertiary institutions are well-managed and positioned for excellence. The appointees are expected to bring their wealth of experience and expertise to bear in their respective roles.
