Governor Soludo Sets Up Panel to Investigate Onitsha Building Collapse

Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo, has established a panel of inquiry to investigate the recent building collapse in Onitsha, which occurred at Ọdụ Igbo market, Ochanja, and Dennis Memorial Grammar School. The panel, led by Engr. Sir Victor Meju, comprises experts from various professional bodies in Nigeria.

According to Governor Soludo, “The quick composition and inauguration of this panel show the importance we place on this matter. We charge you to discharge your duties with utmost professionalism in the discharge of your job description.”

The panel’s terms of reference include identifying the immediate and underlying causes of the collapse, assessing the role of relevant authorities in monitoring and enforcing building codes and safety standards, and reviewing compliance and making recommendations within 28 days.

As stated by the Governor, “The panel is made up of the state chairmen of the various chapters of various professional bodies in Nigeria. Their appointment was a result of the offices they occupy.”

The panel members include Arc. Ikenna Eboh, Chairman, Nigerian Institute of Architects (NIA) Anambra State Chapter; Mr. Nwofor Ben Obiora, Chairman, Nigerian Institute of Town Planners (NITP) Anambra State Chapter; Surv. Gabriel Okeke, Chairman, Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors, Anambra State Chapter; Mr. Kingsley Nweke, Chairman, Nigerian Institute of Builders (NIOB) Anambra State Chapter; MD/CEO Anambra State Material Testing Laboratory; Prof. Ezeagu Akaolisa, Chairman, Institute of Structural Engineers; and the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Housing, Anambra State, as Secretary of the Committee.

While expressing optimism about getting an impeccable set of recommendations, Governor Soludo assured that “We may use the recommendations to effect corrective actions.”

Engr. Meju, speaking on behalf of the panel members, assured that “We will discharge our duty to the best of our ability and articulate our recommendations in the interest of the greater number of ndị Anambra.”

The establishment of the panel demonstrates the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety of lives and properties in the state. The public expects a thorough investigation and implementation of measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
