The Labour Party flagbearer, Peter Obi, has criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his recent comments on poverty in Nigeria. Tinubu had stated that Nigeria is not the only country facing hardship, but Obi believes that this statement trivializes the country’s economic challenges.
Obi expressed disappointment in Tinubu’s remarks, saying that instead of generalizing the issue, the President should offer concrete solutions to tackle the unique struggles facing Nigerians. He emphasized that Nigeria is currently facing numerous challenges, including poverty, insecurity, poor education quality, high infant mortality rates, corruption, unemployment, and infrastructure and healthcare challenges.
Obi urged those in leadership positions to provide direction, guidance, and reassurance in times of crisis, rather than downplaying the country’s circumstances. He stressed that a true leader provides solutions, not excuses.
This reaction comes after Tinubu’s remarks on poverty during a visit from a National Assembly delegation to celebrate Eid-el-Kabir with him. Tinubu had urged citizens to adopt new values to facilitate progress and warned against criminal acts like vandalism and theft.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar also criticized Tinubu’s comments, advising him not to trivialize Nigeria’s economic challenges. The exchange highlights the ongoing debate on the country’s economic situation and the need for effective leadership to address its challenges.
