A 32-year-old housewife, Rahmat Abdulateef, was remanded in prison on Friday by an Abeokuta Magistrates Court for allegedly faking her own kidnapping to extort money from her husband.
The police accused Rahmat of arranging her own kidnapping on June 20 at Elite Road in Abeokuta, to get money from her husband, Mr. Ogunbummi Lateef.
The court did not take Rahmat’s plea and remanded her in prison for 60 days, pending legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecution. The case was adjourned until September 19 for further hearing.
According to the police counsel, Insp Adekunle Opayemi, Rahmat’s action contravened the laws of Ogun State regarding kidnapping and related offenses.
The magistrate, Mrs. O.O Odumosun, ordered Rahmat to be held in prison until the next court date, September 19.
This case highlights the serious consequences of faking one’s own kidnapping and the importance of seeking legal advice before taking drastic actions.
