Chelsea Football Club has finalized two significant transfers, selling Ian Maatsen to Aston Villa for £38 million ($48 million) and Hakim Ziyech to Galatasaray on a permanent deal. Maatsen’s transfer marks a significant profit for Chelsea, who extended his contract by a year in January before loaning him to Borussia Dortmund.
Maatsen impressed at Dortmund, starting all seven European matches, including the Champions League final, and featuring in 15 Bundesliga games. Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has long admired Maatsen, and his addition will bolster Villa’s defense ahead of their Champions League campaign.
Hakim Ziyech, who spent last season on loan with Galatasaray, has joined the Turkish club permanently. Despite injuries, Ziyech made 23 appearances, scoring eight goals and providing four assists. His one-year contract includes an option for an additional season.
Chelsea’s decision to sell Maatsen and Ziyech aligns with their strategy to restructure and balance the squad while ensuring financial prudence. The sales will help Chelsea comply with the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules (PSR).
