Chidinma Modupe Okafor, a 30-year-old Lagos resident, has broken the Guinness World Record for the longest crocheting marathon, lasting 72 hours. Okafor surpassed the previous record of 34 hours and seven minutes set by Alessandra Hayden in 2021.
During her three-day “crochet-a-thon,” Okafor created a white dinner gown, showcasing her artistry and perseverance. She aimed to promote awareness about crocheting and its benefits, having been passionate about the craft since childhood.
Okafor had to crochet nonstop, with only two hours of break time per day, to eat, sleep, use the restroom, or change clothes. She prepared rigorously, training mentally and physically, and strategized to maintain a consistent pace while minimizing fatigue.
Inspired by fellow Nigerian Hilda Baci, who completed the longest cooking marathon last year, Okafor initially intended to crochet a wedding gown but settled for a dinner gown due to exhaustion. Her achievement demonstrates her dedication and passion for crocheting, and she hopes to inspire others to take up the craft.
