The federal government has attributed recent train derailments in the country to vandalism and criminality on rail tracks. Transportation Minister, Mr. Said Alkali, stated that the government is addressing the incidents through proactive measures.
Mr. Alkali directed the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) to investigate the July 4 derailment between Itakpe in Kogi and Warri in Delta, and ensure the safety and welfare of all passengers on board. He also assured that the distressed coaches would be evacuated to resume services as soon as possible.
The minister sympathized with those affected and assured the public of their safety and welfare. He urged stakeholders in the railway industry to prioritize safe and secure operations. Mr. Alkali noted that some incidents were caused by deviants who do not wish the country well, but did not provide further details.
