ECOWAS Approves $1 Million to Fight Terrorism in Nigeria

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) announced on Friday that it has approved $1 million to combat terrorism in Nigeria in 2024. This was revealed by Prof. Fatou Sow Sarr, the ECOWAS Commissioner for Human Development and Social Affairs, during her presentation at the ECOWAS parliament plenary in Abuja.

Prof. Sarr stated that the funds are part of a broader $4 million Human Response Plan (HRP) dedicated to counter-terrorism efforts. Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger Republic will each receive $1 million to help mitigate the impact of terrorism and armed conflict, which have severely affected millions of people in the region.

“These funds are essential to mitigate the impact of terrorism and armed conflict, which have seriously affected the lives of millions of people,” she said.

The HRP 2024 aims to address the urgent needs of 5.3 million people affected by conflict and instability across ten West African countries, including Benin, Cote d’Ivoire, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Togo. The total budget for this initiative is $13 million, intended to provide critical assistance and support to the most vulnerable populations in these nations.

“This allocation reflects a commitment to meeting the diverse needs of the region, ensuring that no community is left behind,” Prof. Sarr added.
