MURIC Claims Nationwide Protest Has Been Hijacked

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has accused the organizers of the ongoing nationwide protest in Nigeria of losing control over the demonstrations. In a statement issued on Friday, Professor Ishaq Akintola, Founder and Executive Director of MURIC, urged the protest organizers to call off the demonstration.

The protest, which began on August 1, 2023, was initially peaceful in some states but turned violent in others. Reports indicate that there were casualties, and several buildings and vehicles were destroyed. Additionally, there were incidents of phone snatching, harassment, and looting in various locations.

MURIC criticized the organizers for failing to maintain control and condemned the violence as “heartless, barbaric, and demonic.” The group also noted that security measures intended to confine the protest to designated areas were ignored.

While MURIC acknowledged the peaceful conduct of some protesters and leaders, it urged the organizers to end the protest, citing concerns that continued demonstrations could further escalate violence across the country.
