Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has strongly condemned a recent social media campaign under the hashtag #IgboMustGo, which has called for the removal of Igbo people from Lagos and the Southwest region of Nigeria. The governor’s statement came five days after the campaign began and just hours after former Vice President Atiku Abubakar also criticized the move.
The controversial campaign was initiated by a pro-Lagos social media account known as @lagospedia. The account, which has since been deleted, was reportedly managed by one Ifeoluwa Bolaji from Ikorodu. His identity and photographs have been widely circulated online, with some users even offering a reward of N900,000 for information leading to his location.
In response, Gboyega Akosile, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to Governor Sanwo-Olu, distanced the governor and the Lagos State Government from the “reckless, divisive, and dangerous rhetoric” promoted by the account. Akosile emphasized that such statements are not representative of the government’s stance or Lagos’s inclusive spirit.
Governor Sanwo-Olu condemned the campaign as an attempt to create conflict between the Yoruba and other ethnic groups who live in Lagos. He stressed that Lagos is a city for all Nigerians, regardless of their ethnic background, and that the state will not tolerate any efforts to undermine this unity.
“The post is not only reckless but also aims to sow discord between the Yoruba and other tribes. Lagos is a city for all Nigerians, and we will not tolerate any attempt to undermine our unity,” Sanwo-Olu said in his statement.
The governor has called on security agencies to investigate the individuals behind the provocative post and ensure that they are held accountable. He reassured Lagosians of his commitment to maintaining peace and stability within the state.
“I appeal to all Lagosians to ignore such inflammatory posts and remain focused on fostering peace and unity. My administration will continue to work diligently to ensure lasting peace in Lagos,” Sanwo-Olu added.
The governor’s swift reaction highlights the seriousness with which the Lagos State Government is treating the issue of ethnic harmony and social cohesion. By publicly rejecting the divisive messages and urging unity, Sanwo-Olu aims to reinforce Lagos’s reputation as a city that embraces diversity and harmony.
This incident underscores the broader challenge of managing ethnic relations and social tensions in a diverse metropolis like Lagos. The governor’s response reflects a commitment to countering divisive rhetoric and promoting inclusivity in one of Nigeria’s most vibrant cities.
For now, Lagosians are encouraged to remain calm and focus on building a peaceful and cohesive community, despite the attempts of some to stir conflict. The government’s stance on this issue will be closely watched as it continues to navigate the complex dynamics of urban governance and social integration.
