Otti Engages Abia Workers on New Minimum Wage and Announces New Benefits

Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has initiated discussions with labor union leaders about implementing the new national minimum wage of N70,000. The Governor addressed the matter during his monthly media interaction at the Government House in Umuahia.

Otti explained that while his administration is collaborating with labor unions on the payment modalities, it is also awaiting fidance from the federal government. Additionally, a bill will be presented to the State House of Assembly to address relevant sections of state and local government funding laws.

The new minimum wage law, signed by President Bola Tinubu on July 29, 2024, after discussions with the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, has not yet been adopted by all states. As of now, 27 states and the Federal Capital Territory have not set up committees for its implementation. In contrast, seven states, including Abia, have established committees, and only Lagos and Edo have begun paying the new wage.

Governor Otti emphasized that progress is being made in Abia. “A committee has already been set up, and the government team is working with the Nigeria Labour Congress. We are making progress,” he said.

Otti also addressed rumors about the resignation of former Health Commissioner Dr. Ngozi Okoronkwo. He clarified that while the investigative panel found no evidence of financial impropriety, there were procedural lapses. Okoronkwo resigned, and her resignation was accepted without any allegations of theft.

Regarding the former Commissioner for Science and Technology, Otti confirmed there were no issues between him and the government.

In other updates, Otti announced that teachers in Abia would receive a new compensation package, including an extension of their retirement age from 60 to 65 years. Similarly, nurses will see their retirement age extended to 65 years. This move is part of a broader strategy to improve working conditions and attract qualified professionals.

Otti outlined his administration’s priorities, including security, health, agriculture, education, infrastructure, and digital technology. He revealed plans to digitize government activities and establish a tech hub and R&D lab in Abuja to foster innovation.

Regarding local government elections, Otti stated that a timetable would be released once legislative matters are resolved. He also praised the “Operation Crush Outfit” for improving security in the state.

The Governor assured that Abia has not yet borrowed to finance ongoing projects but remains open to financial offers from institutions such as the African Development Bank and the Islamic Development Bank. He emphasized maintaining a healthy state economy and financial prudence.

Otti expressed gratitude to Abians for not participating in recent hunger protests, which he feared could have disrupted peace and security. He reaffirmed his commitment to addressing the people’s needs and improving their living standards.

On the issue of disengaged casual workers employed by the previous administration, Otti assured that qualified individuals would be integrated into the state civil service, while those without proper qualifications would not be retained.
