Tinubu Announces Major Funding Boost for DICON to Enhance Weapon Production

President Bola Tinubu has pledged significant investments in the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) to enhance its weapon production capabilities and achieve its objectives by 2030. This commitment was made during the 60th anniversary celebration of DICON and the inaugural African Defence Industries Conference held in Abuja.

Represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, Tinubu emphasized that national security is a top priority for his administration. He highlighted the importance of a comprehensive approach to address Nigeria’s security challenges, aligning with the “Whole of Government and Society Approach.”

The President noted that the recent enactment of the DICON Act 2023 marks the beginning of a new era for the organization. The Act is expected to strengthen DICON’s role as a central player in Nigeria’s Military Industrial Complex, enhancing its capacity for defense manufacturing and technology development.

Tinubu’s speech underscored the DICON Evolution Strategy and Road Map 2030, which aims to bridge performance gaps in Nigeria’s Military Industrial Complex and position DICON as a leading global player. This strategy aligns with two key priorities of the President’s “Renewed Hope Agenda”: improving national security and advancing economic diversification through industrialization, digitization, and innovation.

The President committed to substantial investments in DICON to ensure the organization meets its goals within the 2030 timeframe. He highlighted several planned upgrades, including the establishment of automated production lines for unmanned aerial and land vehicles, which are expected to enhance Nigeria’s defense infrastructure and address contemporary security threats.

Additionally, Tinubu announced the introduction of the BAT A-1 Specialized Assault Rifle, aimed at countering small arms proliferation and equipping security forces with advanced weaponry. The planned micro motherboard processing facility will support robotics and artificial intelligence innovations, leveraging resources from the new lithium development plant in Nasarawa State.

The expansion of production capabilities and research efforts is projected to create jobs, develop human capital, and stimulate economic growth. A tech hub and R&D lab in Abuja will foster innovation and attract young talent, further advancing Nigeria’s defense industry.

The President also emphasized the role of international collaborations in achieving these goals. He welcomed global partners to join Nigeria in building a safer and more prosperous Africa, underscoring the importance of strategic partnerships in enhancing regional security.

The DICON investment plan reflects a broader commitment to modernizing Nigeria’s defense capabilities and reinforcing national security. As the nation celebrates DICON’s 60th anniversary, the new strategy promises to elevate Nigeria’s position in the global defense industry while addressing critical security challenges at home.
