The nominations for the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) have been announced, and several African artists, including Burna Boy, Tems, and Tyla, have made the list. This year’s VMAs, one of the most anticipated events in the music industry, will take place on September 11, 2024, at the UBS Arena in Elmont, New York.
The awards celebrate the best in music video production over the past year, featuring top names such as Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, and Megan Thee Stallion. Rising stars like Chappell Roan, Sabrina Carpenter, and Gracie Abrams are also in the running for various awards.
Burna Boy has been nominated for Best Afrobeat, while Tems and Tyla are also in the running in this category. The Best Afrobeat category is one of the most competitive, with artists like Ayra Starr, Chris Brown, and Usher also vying for the award.
The VMAs feature 21 categories in total, with voting currently ongoing. Among the major categories are Video of the Year, Artist of the Year, and Song of the Year. Notable nominations include Taylor Swift and Post Malone for “Fortnight” in both Video of the Year and Song of the Year categories.
The event, originally scheduled for September 10, was moved to September 11 to avoid clashing with the first presidential debate between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump.
The VMAs are expected to be a star-studded event, with fans eagerly awaiting the results and the performances that will highlight the evening.
