West Ham United’s attempt to sign Brazilian midfielder Richard Rios from Palmeiras has hit a roadblock, with their £16.6 million offer being turned down. Renowned journalist Pipe Sierra broke the news on his X account on August 27, revealing that Palmeiras has no interest in negotiating Rios’ departure.
The rejection comes as West Ham intensifies its efforts to strengthen the squad before the summer transfer window closes on August 30. Despite their interest, the Hammers have yet to make further progress in securing the 23-year-old midfielder.
West Ham has had an active transfer window, bringing in several new players to bolster their chances in the upcoming season. Under the guidance of sporting director Tim Steidten and manager Julen Lopetegui, the team has made significant strides, aiming to improve their standing in both domestic and European competitions.
Among the most notable additions to the squad is former Manchester United right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who is expected to become the club’s first-choice right-back, taking over from Vladimir Coufal. Wan-Bissaka’s arrival follows the departure of Ben Johnson, who left the club to join newly-promoted Ipswich Town.
While Rios would add depth to West Ham’s defensive midfield options, the club already has a strong lineup in that area with Edson Alvarez and Guido Rodriguez. Therefore, some question the necessity of pursuing another defensive midfielder, especially with West Ham reportedly close to signing Paris Saint-Germain’s Carlos Soler as a backup for playmaker Lucas Paqueta.
As the transfer deadline approaches, West Ham fans eagerly await further developments. The club’s management is focused on making strategic signings to enhance the team’s overall performance, with eyes on returning to European football.
