Abuja, Nigeria – August 29, 2024:** The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, has returned to the Labour House after meeting with police authorities in Abuja today. This meeting followed an invitation from the police, who had summoned Ajaero in connection with allegations of treason and terrorism financing.
Ajaero arrived at the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) facility located at Old Abattoir by Guzape Junction at around 10:17 AM. He was accompanied by senior NLC officials, including human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN), Marshal Abubakar, and activist Deji Adeyanju.
The police had requested Ajaero’s presence following a night raid on the NLC national secretariat in Abuja, aimed at uncovering materials allegedly linked to the recent “End Bad Governance In Nigeria” protest. The police raid and subsequent invitation had stirred tensions within the labour community, with the NLC threatening to launch an indefinite nationwide strike if Ajaero was arrested.
Several unions, including the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE), the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), and the National Union of Textile Garment and Tailoring Workers of Nigeria (NUTGTWN), have already issued strike notices to their members in response to the unfolding situation.
As of now, Ajaero has not been detained, and the NLC has indicated it will continue to monitor the situation closely. Further updates are expected as the situation develops.
