Onyinyechi Mark breaks world record, wins Nigeria’s first Paralympic gold

Nigerian powerlifter Onyinyechi Mark made history at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, winning Nigeria’s first gold medal with a record-breaking performance. The 23-year-old athlete competed in the women’s 61kg division, where she lifted an incredible 150kg, setting a new world record.

Mark’s performance surpassed her competitors, including China’s Cui Jianji, who claimed silver with a 140kg lift, andexico’s Amelia Perez, who earned bronze with a 130kg lift. Her 150kg lift also broke the previous world record held by fellow Nigerian powerlifter, Lucy Ejike,

This victory continues Nigeria’s legacy of excellence in Paralympic powerlifting. Nigerian athletes, including Ejike and Bose Omolayo, have set numerous world records in the sport over the years. Nigeria’s success at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, where the country won ten medals, including four golds, further cements its status as a Paralympic powerhouse.

Mark’s historic achievement reinforces Nigeria’s dominant presence in the sport and sets the stage for continued success at the Paris 2024 Games.
