The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has addressed recent bribery allegations related to a viral video showing a confrontation at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos. In a statement signed by Mrs. Obiageli Orah, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, FAAN clarified that the individual involved in the incident was a cargo agent, not a passenger, who was operating illegally at the airport.
According to FAAN, the cargo agent refused to pay the required charges and behaved in a manner that caused damage to airport equipment and strained resources. The authority emphasized that there was no wrongdoing by its staff, stating, “We would like to clarify that there was no form of molestation by FAAN staff, neither was there any request for a bribe during the incident.”
FAAN described the agent’s actions as “an act of blackmail,” reaffirming that the staff was merely enforcing airport policies regarding cargo operations. The authority reminded cargo agents and the public that cargo operations must be conducted in designated areas, using appropriate vehicles and personnel, and all necessary fees must be paid.
FAAN also outlined penalties for non-compliance, including a fine of N5000 for failures such as not using designated cargo terminals or causing damage to airport facilities through improper handling.
The statement highlighted FAAN’s commitment to providing clear guidelines for airport operations to ensure safety and efficiency. “By working together, we can ensure a safe and efficient airport experience for all,” the statement concluded, urging adherence to established rules to prevent similar incidents in the future.
