Former Benue State Governor and current senator, Gabriel Suswam, has raised concerns over the escalating cost of living in Nigeria, pointing to the skyrocketing price of basic goods like eggs. Speaking during an interview on Channels TV, Suswam highlighted how inflation is affecting daily life for many Nigerians, including himself.
“A crate of eggs that was less than N1,000 is now N10,000,” Suswam stated. “So it means that me and you can’t afford to eat eggs in our houses. I left government for almost 10 years.”
The sharp rise in the cost of everyday goods is a reflection of the broader economic challenges Nigerians are facing. According to Suswam, the worsening situation is making it difficult for people to afford food and transport. He urged President Bola Tinubu to convene a meeting to address not only economic issues but also the growing inability of citizens to meet basic needs.
“The President should call a meeting not just on economics; people cannot transport themselves to their offices, people cannot afford to feed their families,” Suswam added.
Nigeria has been grappling with severe economic challenges following a series of policy changes made by the Tinubu administration. Inflation has surged, and many households are struggling to make ends meet. The removal of fuel subsidies and other economic measures have been particularly hard-hitting, prompting public outcry.
Suswam is not alone in his criticism. Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has also voiced concerns about the impact of current economic policies on the Nigerian population. Obi warned that the rising costs of living are contributing to widespread hunger, poverty, and mental health crises in the country. He emphasized that urgent action is needed to address these growing challenges.
Additionally, former vice president Atiku Abubakar has criticized the Tinubu administration’s approach to managing the fuel subsidy removal. According to Atiku, the government’s handling of the issue has contributed to the worsening economic situation in Nigeria. He described the approach as “haphazard and disingenuous,” blaming it for the economic hardships Nigerians are facing.
Atiku, like Suswam, has called on the government to be more attentive to the plight of ordinary citizens. The rising cost of fuel, food, and other essentials has left many Nigerians struggling to afford even the most basic necessities.
With inflation continuing to rise and no immediate relief in sight, Suswam’s call for a national dialogue on the economy has gained traction. Many Nigerians are hoping that the government will take more concrete steps to address the issues at hand and ease the burden on households across the country.
As economic challenges persist, the public continues to look to the government for solutions that will stabilize prices and provide relief to the millions of Nigerians affected by the crisis.
