NUSA Rejects Appointment of New Enugu Neuropsychiatric Hospital Director, Cites Alleged Manipulation

The National Association of University Students (NAUS) has rejected the appointment of Dr. Ngozichukwu Unaogu as Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital in Enugu, alleging manipulation and irregularities in the selection process.

Controversy arose following an interview conducted on July 11, 2024, by an eight-member panel chaired by the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Health, Mrs. Daju Kachollom. According to sources, Dr. Unaogu, the newly appointed director, scored lower in the interview than Dr. Andrew Orovwigbo, who achieved 65.3% compared to Unaogu’s 59.2%. Despite this, Dr. Unaogu was named as CMD, sparking accusations of favoritism and interference.

In August, reports suggested that Dr. Tunji Alausa, the Minister of State for Health, may have pushed for Dr. Unaogu’s appointment despite her reported lower performance. NAUS, in a statement signed by its Deputy National President, Comr. Meshach Anthony Nwankwo, condemned the appointment as unfair, calling it an act of “impunity” and vowing to resist the decision through civil disobedience if it is not reviewed.

NAUS emphasized concerns over transparency and fairness, stating that both candidates had signed attestations acknowledging the selection process as free from manipulation. However, NAUS contends that the outcome reflects the opposite. Several civil society groups have reportedly joined NAUS in calling for a re-evaluation of the appointment.

“We call on the new Minister of Health to investigate this matter urgently,” NAUS said in its statement. “The leadership of NAUS will engage with the Ministry to ensure justice is served, as justice delayed is justice denied.”

Dr. Unaogu currently serves as the hospital’s Chief Consultant Psychiatrist and Head of Training and Research, while Dr. Orovwigbo, the other candidate, is a Chief Consultant Psychiatrist and Head of the Psychogeriatric Unit.

The association’s call for accountability has added pressure on health authorities to address transparency in senior medical appointments, with many in the public and academic communities closely watching for further developments.
