Russia Criticizes U.S. Democracy, Calls for Self-Reflection Amid Election Campaign Tensions

Russia has once again taken aim at the United States’ political system, with Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova criticizing the increasingly contentious nature of the U.S. presidential election. In a recent interview, Zakharova suggested that the U.S. political system is in a state of severe decline, highlighting what she described as a lack of meaningful policy discussion and the rise of divisive rhetoric.

Zakharova argued that the ongoing election season in the U.S. is marked by “incendiary rhetoric” rather than constructive debate, as the political discourse has become increasingly focused on inflaming emotions rather than addressing substantive issues. She described the election as “one unending quarrel,” where Republican candidate Donald Trump and Democratic incumbent Vice President Kamala Harris have spent more time attacking each other than presenting viable solutions for the nation’s challenges.

“Instead of meaningful debate, we are witnessing a continuous process of inflaming passions,” Zakharova said, claiming that the U.S. electoral system has become “archaic.” She added that new technologies are merely being used to cover up the “gaping wounds” of American democracy without bringing about real reform.

Zakharova also criticized the U.S. for continuing to lecture other nations about democracy, despite its own internal challenges. “The U.S., with all its political commentators and democracy experts, should stay quiet for years and stop judging the quality of democracy in other nations until they address their own pressing issues,” she said.

The Russian official traced the root of America’s political struggles to the influence of the country’s wealthy elites, whom she accused of abandoning any moral principles in favor of pursuing financial gain. “The country is ruled by clans whose only guiding philosophy is money. For wealth—no matter its source—they will do anything,” she stated, claiming that these powerful groups have undermined genuine political discourse in the U.S.

Zakharova further emphasized that the elites’ control over the political system has left many Americans feeling disoriented, while allowing the powerful to serve their own interests without accountability. “These elites sideline the partisan structure, replacing real debates with a pseudo-scientific agenda and imposing a new ethical order,” she said.

Her comments reflect ongoing tensions between Russia and the U.S., particularly regarding the state of democracy in both countries. As the U.S. election continues to unfold, the war of words between the two nations shows no sign of abating.
