The African Diaspora in the United States came together on November 21, 2024, for an engaging virtual Town Hall meeting focused on the African Union’s (AU) 6th Region elections. Hosted via Zoom, the event began at 6:00 PM CST and was attended by participants eager to discuss the nomination and election processes for representatives to the Economic, Social, and Cultural Council (ECOSOCC) of the AU.
The meeting provided a platform for the African Diaspora to explore the election guidelines, which emphasize transparency and inclusivity. As outlined in the election process document, participants must join their respective regional WhatsApp groups, where they can share and review completed application forms submitted by candidates. This democratic system ensures that every group member has the opportunity to review candidate qualifications and cast their votes in designated “Results” sub-groups.
Key steps in the election process include:
1. Submission of completed application forms by candidates.
2. Open discussion and review of applications within regional groups.
3. Voting by group members in a transparent manner on a designated voting day.
The AU’s 6th Region, representing the Diaspora, aims to elect principal and deputy representatives across various global regions, including the USA, Canada, the Caribbean, and others. For the United States, four principals and four deputies will be elected to represent the region’s interests.
This Town Hall underscored the importance of active participation in the election process. By making their voices heard, members of the African Diaspora strengthen their representation in the AU and contribute to its mission of fostering unity, development, and cultural exchange.
