Global streaming giant Netflix has dismissed rumors about its alleged plans to leave Nigeria. The speculation, which caused unease among stakeholders in the country’s entertainment industry, was addressed by Netflix through its public relations firm, Hill & Knowlton Strategies.
Speaking on behalf of Netflix, Edafe Onoriode, Group Account Director, stated:
“We are not exiting Nigeria. We will continue to invest in Nigerian stories to delight our members.”
The concerns gained traction following unverified reports that Netflix had canceled several projects previously commissioned in Nigeria. Renowned Nollywood filmmaker Kunle Afolayan was also quoted in viral reports suggesting the company was scaling down its operations.
However, Netflix reaffirmed its commitment to Nigeria’s creative economy. Since entering the Nigerian market in 2016, the platform has been a significant supporter of Nollywood, contributing to the growth of the industry through partnerships and the global promotion of Nigerian films.
The clarification from Netflix has come as a relief to many, as the platform remains one of the key drivers of content creation and storytelling in Nigeria.
For the time being, Netflix’s focus appears to be firmly set on fostering talent and bringing more Nigerian stories to its global audience.
