OAU Students Protest Poor Power Supply and Hardship in Hostels After Fee Hike

Ile-Ife, Osun State– Students of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) have expressed their frustration over the ongoing electricity rationing in campus hostels, describing the situation as unjustifiable and unbearable, especially after a significant hike in hostel fees.

The Great Ife Students’ Union, in a statement signed by its President, Omoboriowo Damilola Isaac, and Secretary General, Babatimehin Kínfẹ́ọsi, strongly criticised the school management for failing to deliver on promises made during the fee increment.

“This move is entirely unjustifiable, especially considering the exorbitant increment in hostel fees imposed on students this session,” the statement read.

Students living in halls such as Akintola Hall and ETF have reportedly endured significant hardship due to the irregular power supply. The Union accused the management of betraying students’ trust, noting that the increased fees were justified by the promise of improved amenities, particularly uninterrupted electricity.

Students’ Demands

The Students’ Union has issued the following demands:

1. Immediate restoration of uninterrupted electricity across all hostels.

2. Transparency regarding the reason for the power rationing.

3. Improved service deliveryin all halls of residence.

The Union warned that failure to address these demands promptly would result in peaceful demonstrations and engagement with relevant authorities.

“Enough is enough,” the statement continued. “Should these demands not be met promptly, we will take decisive act”

Many students have expressed disappointment in the management’s inability to fulfil promises tied to the fee hike. They accused the administration of negligence and insensitivity to their plight.

The Union assured students of its unwavering commitment to their welfare and urged them to remain united. “Together, we will resist oppression and demand the standard of living we deserve,” the statement concluded.

This development adds to the growing tension between students and university management in Nigeria, as institutions grapple with economic realities and student demands for better living conditions.
