Cross River Magistrates Declare Indefinite Strike Over Unresolved Welfare Issues

Calabar, Nigeria — Magistrates in Cross River State have announced an indefinite strike, starting Monday, December 9, 2024, over unresolved welfare concerns.

The decision was confirmed in a statement by Godwin Onah, Chairman of the Magistrate Association of Nigeria (Cross River chapter), and Solomon Abuo, the association’s Secretary. They directed all magistrates to abstain from court sittings and official duties until their demands are met.

“We are hereby embarking on an indefinite strike action from Monday, 9th of December 2024, till our demands are met,” the statement read.

The magistrates submitted eight key demands to the state government on November 5. These include:

– Payment of financial benefits.

– Implementation of pending promotions.

– Monthly imprest of ₦200,000.

– Robing allowance.

– Clearance of two years’ salary arrears for the 2019 batch of magistrates.

– Provision of official accommodation and vehicles.

– Renovation of dilapidated court buildings.

The association accused the state government of ignoring their requests, stating that no negotiations have taken place despite multiple notices and a three-day warning strike.

### Call for Compliance

The strike directive has been issued to magistrates statewide, with the association emphasizing strict compliance.

The situation highlights ongoing challenges in Nigeria’s judicial system, where poor infrastructure and unpaid salaries continue to hinder the effective delivery of justice.

Observers say the strike could cause significant disruptions to legal proceedings in the state, increasing the pressure on the government to address the magistrates’ concerns.
