House of Reps Probe FG’s Failure to Deliver 2,000 Tractors, Implements

The House of Representatives has resolved to investigate the non-delivery of 2,000 tractors, 100 combined harvesters, and other agricultural implements under the Federal Government’s agreement with a private company. The investigation follows the signing of a five-year agreement in November 2023 between the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security and the company, valued at over $70 million and N2.98 billion.

The deal, which was part of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, aimed to improve agricultural mechanization, boost food production, and reduce Nigeria’s reliance on foreign currency for imported farm equipment. The initiative was also seen as a means to address food inflation by increasing local food production.

However, despite the promise of an annual supply of 2,000 tractors, implements, and 100 combined harvesters, no deliveries have been made a year after the agreement was signed. The delay has raised concerns about the progress of the Renewed Hope Agenda in agriculture, particularly as the country has missed two farming seasons due to the lack of equipment.

Honorable Saba Adam, who moved the motion for investigation in the House of Representatives on Tuesday, described the non-delivery of the equipment as a setback to the country’s agricultural mechanization efforts. Adam expressed concerns that the failure to deliver the machinery was hindering Nigeria’s goals for food sufficiency.

In response, the Speaker of the House, Femi Gbajabiamila, adopted the motion and instructed the Committee on Agricultural Production and Services to investigate the delay. The committee has been tasked with reviewing the status of the agreement and the reasons behind the failure to deliver the machinery. The committee is expected to report its findings within four weeks.

The unresolved issue of undelivered farm equipment is a significant setback to the country’s agricultural ambitions. The delay has not only hindered the expansion of mechanized farming but has also impacted food production, particularly with the loss of two planting seasons. The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security had hoped that the availability of the tractors and other implements would reduce the reliance on manual farming and increase crop yields.

The investigation by the House of Representatives is expected to shed light on the reasons for the delay and whether the agreement terms were being met. As Nigeria continues to grapple with food inflation and security issues, the timely delivery of farming equipment is seen as crucial to ensuring food sustainability for the country.
