Ilorin, December 19, 2024– Traders in Kwara State are lamenting the state government’s decision to fence off a major road, a move they say is obstructing local businesses and cutting off customers. The project, initiated under Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq’s administration, has sparked widespread frustration among shop owners who depend on foot traffic for their livelihood.
The fenced road, previously a hub for vibrant commercial activities, is now a barrier for traders in areas such as Challenge, Post Office, Tanker Junction, and Ahmadu Bello Way. Many business owners report significant income drops as customers find it difficult to access their shops.
“How can we survive when customers can’t reach us? The government needs to clarify why this project was carried out without consultation with the people most affected,” lamented one trader.
Another trader expressed concern that the fences might force many businesses to close. “Shops are meant to be by the roadsides for easy accessibility. The fences will destroy businesses in these areas,” said Alkhidir Busari.
Residents in Ilorin have also raised questions about the potential security risks posed by the fenced-off areas. Negeri Akeem, a local resident, warned that the spaces behind the tall fences could become hiding spots for criminals.
“This is not something you see in developed countries,” said another resident, Mogath Hill. “Instead of boosting economic activities, this project is disrupting one of the busiest business areas in the state.”
Critics argue that the state government failed to engage with the community or provide clear communication about the purpose and benefits of the fencing project. “Transparent communication and community engagement could have avoided these disruptions,” said Al-Ahli AbdulKareem, a concerned resident.
Efforts to reach Rafiu Ajakaye, the Chief Press Secretary to the Kwara State Governor, for a response were unsuccessful, as he did not answer calls or respond to messages.
