Benue Assembly Suspends SUBEB Chairman Over Recruitment Controversy

The Benue State House of Assembly has suspended Dr. Grace Adagba, Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), amid controversies surrounding the ongoing recruitment of primary school teachers.

During a plenary session in Makurdi on Thursday, the lawmakers asked Adagba to step aside to allow an investigation into the recruitment process. The decision followed a motion by the Majority Whip, Peter Ipusu, which was supported by a majority of the assembly.

Speaker Hyacinth Dajoh announced the suspension after 21 members voted in favor of the motion, with five opposing it. He directed Adagba to hand over her responsibilities to the board’s permanent member while the investigation proceeds.

The assembly has constituted a seven-member committee to probe the recruitment exercise and submit its findings within seven days. The investigation aims to address concerns over irregularities in the process.

Ipusu noted that the assembly had previously instructed SUBEB to pause the recruitment exercise to allow for investigations but claimed this directive was disregarded. He criticized Adagba for releasing a statement shortly afterward, adjusting cut-off marks for local governments and listing additional candidates for physical screening.

“The chairman’s actions undermine the authority of the assembly and its resolutions,” Ipusu stated, accusing her of lacking the integrity to lead the board.

While many lawmakers supported the motion to suspend Adagba, some, including Majority Leader Saater Tiseer, argued for a fair hearing. Tiseer emphasized that Adagba had appeared before the assembly as requested and warned against prejudiced decisions.

“We must act in line with the Constitution and allow the chairman to explain herself,” Tiseer stated. This position was seconded by Anthony Agom, who also urged his colleagues to ensure fairness in their deliberations.

The debate highlights divisions within the assembly over how to handle the controversy. While some lawmakers view Adagba’s actions as disrespectful to the legislative body, others believe she should be given an opportunity to defend herself.

At the heart of the controversy is the claim that SUBEB’s recruitment process violated the decentralized structure outlined in its establishment law. Critics argue that teacher recruitment should be handled by Local Government Education Authorities, with SUBEB’s role limited to oversight.

The assembly’s decision to suspend Adagba marks a significant development in the ongoing dispute. The outcome of the investigation is expected to determine the next steps for the recruitment exercise and the leadership of SUBEB.

This development has sparked public interest, with many awaiting the committee’s findings and the resolution of the controversy.
