NNPC Debunks Reports of Port Harcourt Refinery Shutdown

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) has denied reports suggesting the shutdown of the Old Port Harcourt Refinery, confirming it remains operational.

In a statement released on Saturday, Olufemi Soneye, the Chief Corporate Communications Officer of NNPC Ltd, described the claims as false. He clarified that preparations for daily loading operations were already underway.

“The attention of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) has been drawn to reports in a section of the media alleging that the Old Port Harcourt Refinery, which was re-streamed two months ago, has been shut down,” the statement read.

“We wish to clarify that such reports are totally false. The refinery is fully operational, as verified a few days ago by former Group Managing Directors of NNPC. Preparations for the day’s loading operation are currently ongoing.”

The NNPC advised the public to disregard the reports, labeling them as baseless and the work of individuals attempting to create artificial fuel scarcity.

The Port Harcourt Refinery resumed operations last month following an extended rehabilitation period. On 26 November, the facility began the truck loading of petroleum products, marking a significant milestone in its revival.

The Port Harcourt Refinery consists of two units: the old plant, with a refining capacity of 60,000 barrels per day (bpd), and the newer plant, which can process 150,000 bpd, combining to a total capacity of 210,000 bpd.

Despite assurances of its functionality, some skepticism persists among Nigerians, with critics questioning the efficiency and output of the refinery.

NNPC Ltd reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring continuous operations at the refinery and addressing any challenges that may arise.

For now, the company urges the public to rely on verified information and avoid panic buying driven by misinformation.
