The All Progressives Congress (APC) and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, have clashed over President Bola Tinubu’s performance, particularly regarding Nigeria’s economy and governance.
In a New Year message, Mr. Obi expressed concerns about the country’s deteriorating political, economic, and security conditions. He highlighted alarming poverty rates, with over 100 million Nigerians living in extreme poverty and 150 million in multi-dimensional poverty.
Mr. Obi also criticized the N70,000 minimum wage, arguing it is inadequate to meet basic needs like purchasing a bag of rice or beans. He called on President Tinubu to reduce the cost of governance and prioritize critical sectors such as security, health, education, and poverty alleviation. Additionally, he urged the government to adopt a more aggressive approach to combat corruption and recover missing funds.
In a swift response, APC spokesperson Felix Morka dismissed Mr. Obi’s claims as misleading and politically motivated. Mr. Morka highlighted what he described as significant progress in the economy under Tinubu’s administration.
“The economy has shown steady growth over the past 18 months, with a record of trade surpluses, increased foreign investments, and a reduction in the debt servicing ratio from 90% to 64%,” Mr. Morka said.
He noted that the president had laid a strong foundation for economic transformation, citing ongoing reforms aimed at reducing inflation from 34% to 15% by the end of the fiscal year.
Acknowledging rising food and drug prices, Mr. Morka emphasized President Tinubu’s commitment to improving conditions for Nigerian households. He pointed to plans to boost local food and drug production as part of efforts to lower costs.
Additionally, the administration is considering a shift from a minimum wage to a national living wage to address workers’ welfare comprehensively.
“This is a significant move that demonstrates the government’s willingness to address workers’ concerns and improve their living standards,” Mr. Morka added.
The APC urged Nigerians to exercise patience and support the president, stating that the reforms are designed to deliver sustainable growth and transformation.
“Tinubu is dutifully turning the nation’s fortunes around, and he deserves the support of Nigerians to achieve a vibrant and prosperous new Nigeria,” Mr. Morka concluded.
As political leaders exchange words, the debate underscores the pressing economic challenges Nigerians face and the contrasting views on how to address them effectively.
