Simon Ekpa, a factional leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), remains in Finnish custody despite the release of two individuals arrested alongside him. The Finnish authorities have not disclosed the identities of the released individuals or the reasons for their release.
Ekpa, apprehended on November 21, 2024, faces allegations of terrorism-related activities, including incitement to violence and funding terrorism in Nigeria. The Päijät-Häme district court had ordered his detention, citing evidence of his involvement in “spreading terrorist propaganda on social media.”
This development comes as the Nigerian government intensifies efforts to secure Ekpa’s extradition. The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, confirmed that the necessary documentation had been submitted to Finnish authorities, expressing confidence that due legal processes would be followed.
“Legal action is going to be taken accordingly,” Gen. Musa stated. “The Federal Government has actually forwarded most of the requirements to the Finnish Government. So, I’m sure the right thing will be done.”
Meanwhile, Ekpa has reportedly claimed responsibility for the killing of four policemen in Imo State and issued fresh threats against the Nigerian government. These claims have heightened concerns about IPOB’s violent activities in southern Nigeria, with Finnish authorities reportedly cooperating with Nigeria to address the situation.
The situation remains fluid, with further updates expected as investigations continue.
