The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has reportedly invited two sons of Nigerian billionaire industrialist, Razaq Okoya, for questioning over an alleged abuse of the naira.
The invitation, signed by Michael Wetkas, the acting director of the EFCC in Lagos, was extended to Subomi and Wahab Okoya in connection with a promotional video for a song, where the naira was allegedly mishandled.
According to the invitation letter, the Okoya brothers are expected to appear at the EFCC’s office at 15A Awolowo Road, Ikoyi, Lagos, at 10 a.m. on Monday, January 13, 2025.
Reports indicate that the brothers were seen in a viral video holding stacks of naira notes, a practice that violates Section 21(3) of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act, 2007, which prohibits the abuse of the national currency.
The Nigeria Police Force has also detained an unnamed officer who appeared in the viral video alongside the Okoya brothers.
Olumuyiwa Adejobi, spokesperson for the police, confirmed the arrest on social media on Friday, January 10, stating that the officer’s actions were unethical and went against the force’s values. The officer is currently undergoing disciplinary proceedings.
The EFCC and other authorities have recently intensified efforts to curb naira abuse, especially during public displays. The anti-graft agency’s action aligns with broader policies aimed at protecting the integrity of Nigeria’s national currency.
The EFCC’s invitation to the Okoya brothers highlights the agency’s commitment to enforcing financial regulations and promoting compliance with existing laws.
