Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has officially approved the appointment of Prince Abimbola Akeem Owoade as the new Alaafin of Oyo. This comes after extensive consultations and traditional divinations by the Oyomesi, the kingmakers of Oyo.
In a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade, the Oyo State government announced that the appointment follows a thorough selection process. The Honourable Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. Ademola Ojo, also highlighted that this announcement resolves the socio-legal disputes that had lingered since the death of the former Alaafin, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, on April 22, 2022.

Prince Akeem Owoade, a 47-year-old entrepreneur, philanthropist, and businessman, has a diverse background. He is the president of 100279 Manitoba Limited, a real estate investment and financial services company based in Manitoba, Canada. Born into a prominent royal family in Oyo, Owoade is a descendant of the Owoade-Agunloye lineage.
Prince Owoade’s educational journey includes studies in mechanical engineering in Nigeria and the United Kingdom, where he obtained both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in the field. He also holds certifications in Project Management (PMP).
The Oyo State government has stated that the date for the new Alaafin’s coronation will be announced after further consultations with relevant stakeholders.
