Ibadan Stampede: Court Grants Bail to Ooni’s Ex-Wife, Hamzat, Principal

The Oyo State High Court in Ibadan has granted bail to three individuals facing charges related to the tragic stampede that claimed the lives of over 35 children during a festive event at the Islamic High School, Bashorun, in December 2024.

Justice Kamorudeen Olawoyin delivered the ruling on Monday, granting bail to Naomi Silekunola, the ex-wife of the Ooni of Ife; Oriyomi Hamzat, owner of Agidigbo FM; and Abdullahi Fasasi, the school’s principal.

Oriyomi Hamzat was granted bail in the sum of N10 million and is required to provide two sureties. The court also directed that his media organization refrain from broadcasting any news on the case.

The defense team had argued last Tuesday that the defendants posed no flight risk and would cooperate fully with the investigation. However, the prosecution, led by the Oyo State Attorney General, Abiodun Aikomo, opposed the motion, citing the seriousness of the charges and the need for justice for the victims and their families.

The stampede occurred during a holiday party hosted at the Islamic High School, where overcrowding and poor crowd control reportedly led to the fatal incident.

Governor Seyi Makinde has maintained that those responsible for the tragedy must face trial but expressed no objection to the court granting bail.

The case has drawn widespread attention, with public calls for justice for the families of the deceased children.
