Italy achieved a historic milestone in 2024, recording 4,692 organ transplants, according to a report released by the Health Ministry on Monday. The figures mark an increase of 226 transplants compared to 2023, making it the highest annual total ever documented in the country.
The report also highlighted a rise in organ donations, which reached 2,110—a 2.7% increase from the previous year. Kidney transplants accounted for nearly half of the total procedures, with 2,393 surgeries performed, representing a 6.6% rise. Heart transplants saw the most significant percentage growth, with 418 operations conducted, up by 13%.
Liver transplants also showed a slight increase, reaching 1,732 (+1.8%). However, lung transplants dropped from 188 to 174, and pancreas transplants remained steady at 36.
Tuscany, Emilia-Romagna, and Veneto were the leading regions for organ donations, with 49.4, 45.5, and 44.7 donors per million residents, respectively.
The Health Ministry commended these achievements, emphasizing the importance of continued efforts to raise awareness about organ donation.
