Ohanaeze Ndigbo Endorses Tinubu’s Second Term Bid, Urges Release of Nnamdi Kan

The apex Igbo socio-cultural group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has announced its support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s second-term bid, emphasizing the need to uphold equity and fairness in Nigeria’s leadership.

In a statement signed by its Deputy President General, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, the group highlighted the principle of rotational presidency as vital for national unity. According to Ohanaeze, after eight years of northern leadership under former President Muhammadu Buhari, it is only just for the South to retain power until 2031.

“Ohanaeze Ndigbo’s endorsement of President Tinubu for a second term in 2027 is decisive and reflects our commitment to a trajectory of peace, stability, and infrastructural development for the Southeast,” the statement read.

The organization called on its members and the entire Igbo community to support this vision, setting aside personal interests for the greater good of the region and the nation.

Ohanaeze also urged President Tinubu to prioritize the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). The group argued that freeing Kanu would promote peace and stability in the Southeast, which has faced persistent insecurity.

“The release of Nnamdi Kanu will not only symbolize mercy but also serve as a catalyst for harmony in the region,” the group stated.

Ohanaeze outlined specific demands aimed at revitalizing the Southeast, including:

– Accelerating the completion of federal road projects.

– Ensuring fair representation in the 2025 national census.

– Creating new states such as Anioma and Aba.

– Revitalizing the Eastern Economic Corridor, including reopening the Calabar Seaport and reviving the Enugu coal mine.

The group also emphasized the need for modern rail connectivity between major cities and towns in the Southeast, including Onitsha, Owerri, Abakaliki, and Awka.

The organization clarified that its endorsement of Tinubu is tied to tangible progress in addressing these demands. “We seek harmony, resilience, and a brighter future for the Igbo people, anchored on infrastructural enhancement and unwavering commitment to security and well-being,” Ohanaeze concluded.

Ohanaeze’s endorsement underscores a strategic alignment with the federal government, signaling a potential shift in the political dynamics of the Southeast ahead of the 2027 elections.
