A lecturer at Kano State Polytechnic, Aliyu Hamza Abdullahi, was attacked in his office on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, by a female student and her boyfriend. The violent incident occurred around 2 p.m. while Abdullahi, who also serves as the department’s exam officer, was attending to students.
According to Auwal Ismail Bagwai, the institution’s Public Relations Officer, the female student, whose identity remains undisclosed, entered the lecturer’s office accompanied by her boyfriend. She allegedly blamed Abdullahi for hindering her academic progress after being told that her grades did not meet the requirements for her preferred course.
The confrontation escalated when the boyfriend produced a cutlass and attempted to strike Abdullahi in the head. Fortunately, nearby students and staff intervened, preventing the situation from becoming fatal. Abdullahi was injured on his hands while trying to defend himself, and he is currently receiving treatment at a local hospital.
“The female student wanted to change her admission to a different department but was told her grades did not meet the requirements for her desired course. Angered by this, she blamed the lecturer and called her boyfriend to attack him,” Bagwai stated.
The incident was reported to the security officers at the institution, who attempted to locate the assailants in the Dorayi area of the state. However, security personnel were met with resistance from a group of thugs and were unable to apprehend the suspects.
Bagwai confirmed that the security agencies are investigating the matter, and efforts are underway to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice. The incident has raised concerns about the safety of staff and students at the polytechnic and the need for improved security on campus.
The institution has vowed to take strong action to address the attack and prevent future occurrences.
