Scores Killed in Fresh Bomb Explosion in Chibok, Borno

Tragedy struck in Chibok, Borno State, as an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated, killing an unspecified number of individuals, including a mother and her child. The incident occurred on Monday in Sikarkur village, within the Chibok Local Government Area, after a civilian vehicle inadvertently triggered the explosive.

Sources report that the IED was allegedly planted by the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), a faction of Boko Haram. It is believed the device was intended to target military patrols in the region.

Numerous people sustained injuries in the explosion, with survivors receiving medical attention at Chibok General Hospital. The vehicle involved and nearby structures were severely damaged and engulfed in flames.

A local resident disclosed, “The bomb was set to target soldiers, but a civilian vehicle hit it, killing many, including a mother and her baby. Her sister and others injured are being treated at the hospital. These incidents occur daily but are rarely reported.”

The blast follows a recent violent attack by ISWAP militants on two Chibok communities, which resulted in the loss of lives and the destruction of a church and several homes.

The use of IEDs and ambushes by Boko Haram and ISWAP continues to pose a significant challenge to security forces and civilians in northern Nigeria. These groups have caused widespread displacement and loss of life, particularly in Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe states.

Chibok remains a symbol of the region’s struggles with terrorism, having captured international attention in April 2014 when Boko Haram abducted 276 schoolgirls in a raid on the Government Girls Secondary School.

In recent years, ISWAP has expanded its operations, particularly around Lake Chad, bolstered by defectors from Boko Haram following the death of its leader, Abubakar Shekau.

Efforts to curb the insurgency remain ongoing, as security forces grapple with the evolving tactics of these extremist groups.
