GAYO Launches Research Fund to Empower Africa’s Youth to Lead Climate Solutions

The Green Africa Youth Organization (GAYO) has launched the Climate Research Fund for African Students (CRFAS),  a transformative initiative aimed at equipping young African researchers with the tools, mentorship, and platforms they need to address critical environmental and climate challenges. In partnership with the University of Cape Coast, this program aims to promote youth-led innovation and deliver lasting solutions for Africa’s most vulnerable communities.

More than a grant, the Climate Research Fund offers capacity-building opportunities, expert mentorship, and access to global knowledge-sharing platforms. These resources will connect students with policymakers, academics, and international stakeholders, amplifying the impact and reach of their research.

Transitioning our world away from fossil fuels towards circularity, renewables, and a resilient Africa cannot succeed if the voices and talents of young people are not empowered to lead frontier climate solutions,” said Joshua Amponsem, Founder of GAYO. He highlighted the underresourcing of academic and research institutions in Africa and expressed hope that this initiative would empower youth to become knowledge leaders in the green transition.

The pilot phase of the program will be hosted by the University of Cape Coast. Speaking at the launch, Prof. Denis W. Aheto, Pro Vice-Chancellor of the University, remarked, “As a leading institution committed to academic excellence and innovation, we are honored to partner on this groundbreaking initiative. It ensures our students and researchers are equipped to contribute to impactful climate solutions, creating a generation of changemakers.”

The Climate Research Fund has already attracted attention from global development partners and environmental organizations, reflecting growing recognition of African youth as vital contributors to global climate action. By prioritizing locally developed solutions, the program aims to address Africa’s unique challenges with innovative, tailored responses.
