NIMC, NIBSS Collaborate to Launch Multipurpose Biometric ID Card

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) and the Nigerian Interbank Settlement System (NIBSS) have unveiled plans to roll out a new multipurpose biometric identity card aimed at enhancing social and economic inclusion in Nigeria.

At a press briefing held in Abuja, the Director General of NIMC, Dr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, described the initiative as a significant step towards addressing identity verification challenges in both government and private sector services. The event also featured key stakeholders, including NIBSS Managing Director, Mr. Premier Oiwoh; AfriGO CEO, Mrs. Ebehije Momoh; and Data Mining Company MD, Mr. Femi Akande.

Features of the Card

Dr. Coker-Odusote highlighted the advanced features of the new biometric ID card, which include:

– Fingerprint-Based Biometric Security: Ensuring unique identification.

– Online and Offline Functionality: Operable in areas with limited internet access.

– Integrated Financial Services: Enabling payments, digital tokens, and wallet functionalities.

– KYC Compliance: Supporting seamless identity verification for banking and other services.

The card will also serve as a tool for self-identification, access to government services, and financial transactions. “It is designed to uplift 133 million Nigerians out of poverty by simplifying access to critical services,” she said.

The multipurpose card is part of a broader initiative to address the needs of government intervention programs and private sector operations. A secondary program, the “Government to People” (G2P) card, will enhance the ability to identify beneficiaries of various social services securely and efficiently.

Dr. Coker-Odusote assured Nigerians that the card will be available at an affordable cost, making it accessible to citizens across all income levels.

Speaking on the collaboration, NIBSS CEO Mr. Oiwoh emphasized the synergy between NIBSS and AfriGO in driving the success of the project. He noted that the card would utilize existing payment infrastructure, including QR codes and biometric authentication, to streamline financial transactions.

Dr. Peter Iwegbu, Director of Card Management, described the card as a “game-changer,” offering instant identification and access to multiple services. Afrigo MD, Mrs. Momoh, called the initiative “phenomenal,” stating it will revolutionize Nigeria’s identity management system.

The rollout of the card marks a significant milestone in the nation’s quest for improved identification systems, with the ultimate goal of fostering greater inclusion and access to essential services.
