– The Ohanaeze Youth Council (OYC), the apex socio-cultural youth organization of the Igbo people, has called on Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State to establish an independent judicial commission to investigate the recent massacre in Orsu. The council condemned the killing of over 25 people and urged the South-East governors to take decisive action against rising insecurity in the region.

Following a National Working Committee meeting in Owerri on January 18, the OYC expressed deep concern over the deteriorating security situation in Imo, Enugu, and Anambra states. The council accused criminal elements of turning the South-East into a zone of terror since the 2021 Owerri prison break and criticized the state governments for failing to address the crisis effectively.

The OYC demanded that Governor Uzodimma set up an independent judicial commission to uncover those responsible for the continuous violence in the state. “The massacre of innocent citizens in Orsu must not be ignored. We urge the Imo State government to conduct a thorough investigation and expose those behind these heinous crimes,” the statement read.

The youth council warned that insecurity in Igboland has escalated beyond common criminal activities and should now be treated as terrorism. It called on the governors of the South-East—Hope Uzodimma (Imo), Peter Mba (Enugu), and Charles Soludo (Anambra)—to work closely with traditional rulers, town unions, and youth leaders to combat the rising threat.

The OYC strongly criticized the current administrations for their failure to prioritize security. “The tenures of Governors Uzodimma, Mba, and Soludo have witnessed unprecedented violence in the region. The records of past administrations, including those of Dr. Sam Mbakwe and Jim Nwobodo, were far better in terms of security,” the council stated.

It called for greater collaboration between the governors and the Directorate of Intelligence (DOI) of the Ohanaeze Youth Council to develop a more effective security strategy.

The council also warned of potential unrest due to the prolonged detention of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). The statement accused South-East governors of complicity in Kanu’s continued incarceration. “If the governors continue to play politics with Kanu’s release, they may not be able to contain the uprising that will follow,” the council cautioned.

The OYC urged Governor Soludo to disband the current political security network in Anambra and instead establish a community-based security outfit managed by local youth leaders and town union executives. The council argued that the governor’s existing security approach had failed to curb violent crimes, including kidnappings and killings.

It also criticized Soludo’s administration for prioritizing political ambitions over public safety. “The so-called ‘Agunaechemba’ security initiative appears to be designed to serve Soludo’s re-election campaign rather than protect Anambra citizens,” the statement read.

The council called on community youth leaders and town union executives to conduct security sweeps in local forests and hideouts used by criminals. It encouraged Igbo youths to draw inspiration from the historic Aba Women’s resistance of 1921 and take collective action against criminal elements terrorizing the region.

The OYC also announced its upcoming National Convention scheduled for February 8, 2025, where new leadership will be elected. A committee has been set up to oversee the event, with Comrade Chilos Godsent serving as chairman. The council encouraged passionate Igbo youths to participate in the elections and contribute to the leadership of the OYC at national, state, and local levels.

The Ohanaeze Youth Council reaffirmed its commitment to holding South-East leaders accountable for the security of the region. It urged the governors to take immediate and decisive action to prevent further bloodshed. “The time for political excuses is over. The security of Ndi Igbo must come first,” the council declared.

The statement was signed by Comrade Igboayaka O. Igboayaka, National President, and Comrade Ifeanyichukwu Nweke, Secretary-General, on January 20, 2025.
