Clarence Peters: Why I Don’t Want to Repeat My Father’s Mistakes with Women

Nigerian music video director Clarence Peters has opened up about his complicated relationship with his father, legendary juju musician Shina Peters, and how his father’s past influenced his approach to women and relationships.

Speaking on the WithChude podcast, Clarence, 41, reflected on the mistakes his father, now 66, made—particularly regarding his treatment of his mother, Clarion Chukwura, a celebrated actress. He revealed that his mother faced backlash from Shina’s colleagues, which affected her career and personal life.

Clarence did not hold back as he described the impact of his father’s actions on their family.

My dad screwed up. I mean, using the word ‘screwed up’ is me putting it lightly because his colleagues blackballed my mum, and she was already dealing with a lot of trauma from when she was young,” he said.

He explained that while working on Inside Life, a project inspired by real-life experiences, he uncovered more details about what his mother endured.

Episode 5 of Inside Life was written by my cousin, who went through that. When my mum read the script, she started crying because she had gone through the same thing,” he added.

Despite his father’s past mistakes, Clarence admitted that he has made similar errors in his own relationships. However, he is determined to break the cycle.

“As much as I was raised by my mother, one of my greatest fears was not to be like my father when it comes to the opposite sex. But I have been a version of that, so I am not a saint. I cannot judge him. I would like to, but I am in no position to,” he confessed.

Clarence also acknowledged that his father, who has lived a lavish lifestyle, is now at a stage in life where he seeks forgiveness and redemption.

He has been with women, driven amazing cars, stayed in the best houses and hotels, and had money. Now he is approaching 70, and all he can do is pray to God for forgiveness,” Clarence noted.

His candid revelations shed light on the struggles within families, the lasting effects of past choices, and the importance of self-awareness in breaking negative cycles.
