UK– Kemi Badenoch, the leader of the United Kingdom’s Conservative Party, has warned that a trade war between the US and the UK would have damaging economic consequences for both nations.
Speaking with journalists on Tuesday, Badenoch expressed concerns over US President Donald Trump’s proposed tariffs on British goods. She stressed that retaliatory measures from the UK would only worsen the situation and harm global trade.
“We should not be engaging in a trade war or tit-for-tat retaliation – that makes everybody poorer,” Badenoch stated, as reported by Sky News.
Her comments come amid growing trade tensions, with reports suggesting that Trump’s administration is considering new tariffs on UK imports, citing unfair trade practices. Economic analysts have warned that such moves could strain relations between the two allies and negatively impact businesses on both sides of the Atlantic.
When asked how the UK could avoid a trade dispute, Badenoch proposed an immediate trade deal between the two nations.
“UK-US trade deal ASAP,” she said, highlighting the need for swift negotiations to protect British businesses and consumers.
Trade experts argue that a prolonged economic conflict could lead to higher prices, job losses, and reduced investment, making it crucial for both nations to seek a diplomatic resolution.
While Trump has been vocal about protecting American industries, UK officials are keen on maintaining strong trade ties with the US without escalating tensions. The coming weeks will be crucial in determining whether both sides can find common ground to prevent a full-blown trade war.
